Direction Signal
1955, 1956 or 1957 Chevrolet
A Six wire circuit, which includes a directional signal switch and flasher unit, is used on the 1957 Chevrolet Direction Signal. This circuit utilizes a filament in the parking light for indication at the front and the stop light filament at the rear.
Indicator lamps are also provided in the instrument cluster. Current is directed through the flasher unit to the switch, from where it is directed to the desired indicator lamps. A canceling feature is provided in the mechanism to return the switch to the "off" position after completion of a turn. Overload protection is provided within the flasher unit.

Below is a simplified schematic of the installation together with the operation of the signal switch in the
neutral position. The figure on the left shows an exploded view of the directional signal housing and switch assembly.
1957 Chevrolet Turn Signal Wiring Diagram
Referring to the Directional Signal Switch Assembly exploded view on the left. Item 15 is the Directional Signal Switch and wiring assembly. Item 9 are the Directional Signal Switch activating pawls and the source of most problems with the 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolet turn signals. Item 10 and 8 are also a source of automatic canceling problems.
If indicator light on dash is on steady or flashes at a very high rate, check for a burned out bulb park or stop lamp. Flasher can be a source of problems when both left and right signal lamps are not working. The horn ring and steering wheel must be removed to repair any problems. A special puller can be easily fabricated to remove the steering wheel.
